Backhoe Loader Buying Guide: Choosing the Right Machine for Your Work
Few machines are as versatile as a backhoe loader. With a loader on the front and an excavator arm on the back, it can dig footings, load trucks, backfill trenches and move material around the site without switching machines. If you're shopping for one, here are the questions we help customers work through.
1. What jobs will you do most?
Utility work and trenching call for good dig depth and a stable platform. Loading and material handling put more emphasis on loader breakout force and lift height. List your top three tasks and use them to compare models.
2. How much dig depth and reach do you need?
Check the deepest trench or footing you dig on a typical job, then add a margin. An extending dipper adds reach without repositioning the machine, which saves time on long trenches.
3. Two-wheel or four-wheel steer?
Standard steering suits most work. Four-wheel or all-wheel steer makes the machine more nimble on tight sites and reduces tire scrub on hard surfaces.
4. Think about the operator
Long days in the seat add up. Look for good visibility, simple controls and a comfortable cab. A comfortable operator is a more productive one.
5. Plan for attachments and service
Hydraulic hammers, augers and quick couplers turn a backhoe into a multi-tool. Ask about attachment compatibility and set up a maintenance plan so the machine stays productive for years.
