Telehandler Basics: How to Choose the Right Capacity and Reach
A telescopic handler, or telehandler, combines the lifting power of a forklift with the reach of a telescopic boom. It's one of the most useful machines on a construction site or farm. Choosing the right one starts with a few key questions.
How much do you need to lift?
Start with the heaviest load you move regularly, such as a pallet of block or a bundle of trusses. Capacity drops as the boom extends, so check the load chart at the height and reach you'll actually work at.
How high and how far?
Think about the tallest structure or stack you work on and how close you can get to it. Ground conditions, setbacks and obstacles often mean you need more forward reach than you expect.
Which attachments?
Forks are standard, but buckets, work platforms, truss booms and grapples let one telehandler do many jobs. Make sure the model you choose supports the attachments you plan to use.
Rent or buy?
If you only need a telehandler for one project or one season, renting can make more sense. Many customers rent first to find the right size, then buy once they know what works best.
